Brick-by-Brick program takes shape outside synagogue

The Men’s Club brick-by-brick program to raise funds for Tifereth Israel Synagogue and to memorialize or praise our loved ones is taking shape alongside the front walkway of the synagogue.

Bricks cost $180 each  for three lines of up to  20 characters.  An explanation sign is posted near the bricks.

Below are some samples of bricks already on site in time for Rosh Hashanah.

SAN DIEGO — With many Tifereth Israel Synagogue Men’s Club members wearing their signature red shirts, we drew a lot of attention at the Jewish Federation’s Men’s Event on Thursday evening, Sept. 29

Several members reported that other people came close to read the legends on their shirts, and to compliment our men for our obvious spirit.

The keynote speaker at the event was Bret Stephens of the Wall Street Journal.  To read Don Harrison’s account of his speech, and the  evening, please click here.

Adat Shalom Men’s Club to discuss U.S. border

Our Past President Phil Snyder has offered to drive a carpool on Sunday, Sept. 18, up to Temple Adat Shalom in Poway, where their Men’s Club is hosting Christopher Harris, a spokesman for Local 1613 of the National Border Patrol Council.

Harris’s topic will be “Our Broken Border — Who’s Getting In? The  9:45 a.m. brunch costs $7 per guest. Snyder notes that the Adat Shalom Men’s Club serves a generous amount of food at its buffets.

With the national organizations for the Men’s Clubs of the Conservative and Reform Movements calling for closer cooperation, this will be an opportunity for us to observe a large Men’s Club in action at a Reform congregation.

If you’re interested in being in Phil’s carpool, which would leave from the synagogue at 9 a.m., please email him at

Aug 11 Exec Committee meeting cancelled

With summer in full swing, and some  members on vacation, it has been decided to cancel the August 11 meeting of the executive committee.

President Bill Sperling announced that any pending club business will be handled either by email or will be docketed for the regular Sept. 8 executive committee meeting.

In the meantime, he said he is looking forward to seeing members at the Jewish community salute to the San Diego  Padres at the ballgame beginning at 1:40 p.m. on Sunday, August 21.

Bowling night over, we head next for a Padres game

EL CAJON – Modeling their spiffy new red shirts with blue and white TISMC logos, Men’s Club members were taught a lesson in bowling by Perry Arenson and his son Michael on Sunday, July 31, at the Parkway Bowl here.

Perry won the high scorer trophy for adults, and Michael easily snagged a similar trophy for youth as other Men’s Club members looked on in awe. Commented TISMC President Bill Sperling: “They must have come here for a week to practice!”

Impressed, the Men’s Club members extended hearty mazel tovs to the father-son Arenson duo, while vowing that next year they’d all be better prepared to give them stiffer competition.

“In the final analysis,” said Sperling, “a good time was had by all – and camaraderie is what the evening was all about!”

The evening had been arranged by TISMC Program Chair Alan Goldenberg. In addition to bowling time and shoe rental, the evening , costing bowlers $25 per person, included pizza and salad.

The special Men’s Club shirts, incidentally, sell for $25 in the small through large categories, and $27 for extra large and extra, extra large. Orders and payments may be placed through the synagogue office, with checks made out to Tifereth Israel Synagogue Men’s Club.  On the memo line, please indicate the size shirt you want.

Our next event will be the Sunday, August 21, Jewish community afternoon (starting at 1:40 p.m.) with the Padres.  President Bill says  “We purchased a block of tickets for Aug 21 at $25 each which includes entrance , kosher hot dog, drink and a Padres hat.

“The hat is white with a blue bill and on the side “Padres” is written in Hebrew letters. The hat complements our new shirts. If you are joining us at the game the tickets can be purchased from Bill Friedel . We have a few tickets left and if interested please make check to TIS Men’s Club and on memo line write ‘Men’s Club day at Petco Park.’

Men’s Club seeks High Holy Day ushers

Fellow Mentches,

For the upcoming High Holy Day season, we are attempting to set a Men’s Club record for participation in the ushering corps. Please help us make a strong showing by signing up for an ushering slot when you receive your High Holy Day packet from the synagogue. You can also let us know by emailing with the subject “usher me in”.

By participating in ushering corps, you are performing a mitzvah by helping check members’ tickets at the entrance, helping elderly members approach the bimah, and maintaining decorum at the doors and curtains of the sanctuary so that all attendees will enjoy a meaningful service.

As an added incentive, all paid up men’s club members who participate in ushering will be entered into a drawing for a 50% discount off our annual Steak in the Sukkah dinner which takes place on Sunday October 16th. Please save the date!

Another opportunity for a family outing comes on August 21 when the Men’s Club will join the rest of the organized Jewish community in attending a San Diego Padres game at 1:40 p.m. against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Tifereth Israel Synagogue Men’s Club members will park their cars at Qualcomm Stadium, then proceed by trolley to Petco Stadium.

Once at the stadium, we will join Jewish community members from throughout San Diego County in a special seating section where we will share our love of baseball, the American past time, and perhaps engage in another favorite past-time, kibbitzing.

Individual tickets range from $25 to $48 depending on whether you choose to sit in the lower reserved section of right field, the field pavilion, Toyota Terrace infield, or the field infield. If you want to buy a ticket on your own you can do so online via, and entering the code JCD16.

Men’s Club President Bill Sperling is investigating purchasing group space, possibly in concert with Temple Emanu-El.  Watch this website for developments.

Admisison entitles us not only to the seats, but also to a Community Day Padres cap, and a pre-game kosher hot dog and a soda catered by The Place. There also will be activities for the children including Pregame photo day, Kids run the bases, and Kidsfest in the Park.
